June 9 Update

This past week in humanities, students completed the final unit in social studies: social programs and taxation in Canada and the United States. Students completed a unit test on the topic on Thursday. Students also finished filming their commercials and creating advertising posters for their Consumerism and Marketing unit.

This week, students will be focused on finishing their employment portfolios, complete with employment essays, Economics for Success activities, Game of Life slideshows, resumes, and mock job-interviews.

Next week, students will review topics from earlier in the year, prepare for PATs with mock tests, and write 2 PATs (Social Studies and Math).

May 27

This week in humanities, students will be completing a unit on "consumerism", for Social Studies. They will be writing a mock PAT-style quiz as well as creating a class commercial based on the marketing scheme of "emotional appeal." Students will also write a reading quiz based on the Alberta Driver's Guide that has been studied in class over the past few months. On Friday, students will continue working on their myblueprint portfolios for health. They will also continue working on their employment portfolios.

May 10

This past week in humanities, students learned about the formatting and planning process of writing a persuasive essay. They wrote a mock PAT essay, before writing their official PAT on Thursday May 9th. Students will receive a course grade from either their official PAT or their in-class practice writing (the higher mark of the two will be recorded). Next week, students will continue to work on their career portfolios. They will also begin a new Social Studies unit on Consumerism.

April 25 Update

This past week, students have been working on checklists to get their career portfolios up to date. The checklist can be found on D2L. Students need to have their teacher's signature on each item before moving on to the next. Items on the checklist include, Economic Planning Assignments 1-4, their "Future Employment" essay, their resume, their "Game of Life" presentation slide, and a mock interview.

Students also read the unit, "Responsible Driving", in the Alberta Driver's Guide and completed a vocabulary chart.

On Friday, students will be introduced to the online career planning program, "myblueprint" to help plan their future paths in high school, post-secondary, and beyond.

April 15 -18

This week in humanities, students will continue working on their literacy by reading the Alberta Driver's Guide. They will also learn about different economic systems and how they affect quality of life. We will have a PAT style unit test on economics on Thursday (multiple choice).

Spring Break

Over the past month, students have been working on their political campaigns, which culminated in a school wide election on Thursday March 21st. Conservatives won the popular vote with the Communists coming in second. Final results, based on number of ridings held, will be released on the first day back at school (April 8th). The party that forms the school's student government will be revealed along with the official opposition.

February 28

This past week, students continued to work on their campaign research for the school election They also began making campaign posters for their respective parties.

Counsellors from Forest Lawn visited the school and gave a presentation on high school courses, enrollment, and requirements. They will return next week to help students select courses for the fall. Letters were sent home for students and parents to determine which area high school they will be attending (Forest Lawn or Jack James). This needs to be returned no later than Monday March 3. If students do not indicate a school, they will automatically be enrolled in Forest Lawn. Changes, inquires, or any other matters concerning high school can also be made at the Forest Lawn or Jack James office, in person.
